The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a scheme established by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and development.
Every Nigerian graduate who is below the age of 30 and has obtained a Bachelor’s degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND) is required to participate in the one-year NYSC program.
However, there are some categories of graduates who are exempted from the NYSC service year and are issued with certificates of exemption. There are also some graduates who are partially excluded from the NYSC scheme and are issued with certificates of exclusion.
Therefore, there are three types of NYSC certificate: certificate of national service, certificate of exemption, and certificate of exclusion.
Difference between the three types of NYSC certificate?
1. Certificate of National Service: This is the certificate issued to graduates who have successfully completed the one-year NYSC program.
It shows that they have fulfilled their obligation to serve their country and are eligible for various job opportunities within Nigeria.
The certificate of national service contains the name, date of birth, state code, call-up number, and passport photograph of the graduate. It also has a unique certificate number that can be verified online or offline.
2. Certificate of Exemption: This is the certificate issued to graduates who are exempted from the NYSC service year based on the following criteria:
- They are over the age of 30 at the time of graduation
- They have served in the Armed Forces or the Nigeria Police Force for more than nine months
- They are members of staff of any of the following: The Nigerian Security Organization, The State Security Service, The National Intelligence Agency, or The Defence Intelligence Service
- They have been conferred with any National Honour
The certificate of exemption shows that the graduate is not required to serve in the NYSC scheme and is qualified for employment in Nigeria.
The certificate of exemption contains the name, date of birth, course of study, institution, year of graduation, and passport photograph of the graduate. It also has a unique certificate number that can be verified online.
3. Certificate of Exclusion: This is the certificate issued to graduates who are partially excluded from the NYSC scheme based on their mode or level of study. The categories of graduates who receive this certificate are:
- Part-time graduates
- Sandwich graduates
- Distance learning graduates
- National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) graduates
The certificate of exclusion shows that the graduate is not required to participate in the orientation camp and other activities of the NYSC scheme, but may be deployed for primary assignment in their state of residence.
The certificate of exclusion contains the name, date of birth, course of study, institution, year of graduation, and passport photograph of the graduate. It also has a unique identification number that can be verified online.
