Unemployment fell again further, in October the unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), this is just as low as in February 2020, before the corona pandemic. In October, a total of 277,000 people were unemployed. Due to the strong economic recovery from the corona crisis, the demand for personnel is high and there are shortages of employees in various sectors.
Thanks to the corona support from the government, there have been few unemployed for some time. Various branches reopened in the summer months, which were previously closed due to the corona measures. This allowed more people to work there. Young people in particular have benefited from this.
Statistics Netherlands also sees a record number of vacancies. The unemployment rate rose slightly in August, but continued to decline in September.
More benefits in agriculture due to seasonal influence
Over the past three months, the number of workers aged 15 to 75 years increased by an average of 21,000 per month to 9.2 million, according to the statistics office. In addition to the unemployed, there were also 3.7 million other unemployed people in this age group. They have not recently looked for a new job or were not immediately available. They are therefore not counted as part of the working population at Statistics Netherlands. Their numbers have fallen by an average of 19,000 per month in the last three months.
At the end of last month, the UWV benefits agency paid 199,100 unemployment benefits. That was 8800 fewer than in September. There was a strong decline in the cultural sector, the hotel and catering industry and the retail sector in particular. The number of unemployment benefits rose by more than 3 percent only in the agriculture, landscaping and fishing sector. According to CBS, this is due to the season.
