Unemployment benefits in the catering industry are falling sharply after easing: unemployment is falling again

Unemployment in the Netherlands fell again in April compared to the previous month, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). On average, the number of unemployed has fallen by 7,000 per month over the past 3 months, mainly due to fewer people looking for work.

In April 2021, 316,000 people were unemployed, according to Statistics Netherlands. That is 3.4 percent of the working population.

People who are not actively looking for a job are not counted among the unemployed. This group has therefore not found a job, but it does ensure that the unemployment rate falls.

However, it is not only this distortion that results in favorable figures. Due to the corona support from the government, there have been few unemployed for some time. In all, 4.1 million people aged 15 to 75 were out of paid work for a variety of reasons last month. In addition to the unemployed, there were 3.8 million people who had not recently looked for or were not available for work. Their numbers have increased by an average of 4,000 per month in the last three months.

Benefits in catering are falling sharply

At the end of April, the UWV benefits agency provided 266,000 unemployment benefits. The number of benefits has thus decreased by almost 16 percent compared to March. Compared to a year ago, when the corona crisis also played a role, the number of benefits is almost 9 percent lower. Especially in the first period of the pandemic and the contact-limiting measures, between March and April 2020, the number of unemployment benefits increased significantly.

In the temporary employment sector and the catering industry, the number of unemployment benefits fell sharply again last month. Those sectors were previously hit hard by the crisis. Now that more and more relaxation is possible, such as partly opening terraces again, employers are looking for staff and fewer people are losing their jobs. The season also influences the number of unemployment benefits. In construction and agriculture, for example, employment usually increases again after the winter. The temporary employment sector also benefits from this.
