Despite a slightly higher unemployment rate, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) records a new record for labor participation. This is because the employment rate is based on the total population and the unemployment rate depends on how many people have been looking for work recently.
Between July and August, the proportion of people looking for work rose slightly and the unemployment rate rose from 3.1 to 3.2 percent, representing 301,000 unemployed. An increase in the summer months is not unusual because temporary contracts in, for example, education expire and holidays slow down the search for work.
Despite this increase, however, as a proportion of the total population, there have never been so many people in work. According to Statistics Netherlands, 69.5 percent of 15 to 74-year-olds participate in the labor market. That equates to 9.1 million people. Statistics Netherlands also reported that the number of unemployment benefits fell for the seventh month in a row.
Only in education did the number of benefits increase
In August, 4 million people aged 15 to 75 were without paid work for various reasons. In addition to the unemployed, there were 3.7 million people who have not actively looked for work recently or who are not immediately available for work. According to the CBS, this group is not included in the working population.
At the end of August, the UWV provided 212,700 unemployment benefits. That is 11,600 fewer than at the end of June. According to Statistics Netherlands, it is customary for fewer unemployment benefits to be paid in the summer months. The relaxation of the contact-limiting measures and the favorable economic situation probably also play a role.
Due to the high demand for personnel, the shortage on the labor market is increasing. The UWV sees shortages to a greater or lesser extent for 67 professional groups. Of these, 30 professional groups have a ‘very tight’ labor market. There are many job opportunities as a welder and sheet metal worker, assembly worker, transport planner and nurse.

The number of benefits for catering staff fell the most. The number of unemployment benefits is only increasing in education. The latter is common for the summer months. Temporary contracts are often terminated at the end of the school year.
