Billionaire Elon Musk has been named Person of the Year by Time magazine. The CEO of, among others, car brand Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX receives this title for the enormous influence he exerts worldwide.
“Few individuals have had more influence on life on Earth than Musk,” said Time, adding that this may also be true in space. According to the magazine, he changed the car market with his electric cars and SpaceX is described as a frontrunner in the field of commercial space travel.
The American is the richest person in the world with a net worth of about $284 billion. Musk made his money in a different way than his fellow billionaires, according to Time. “Instead of one great idea, he had several. And instead of several smart and safe investments, he opted for a few spectacularly risky investments.”
Every year since 1927, Time has chosen one person who has had the most influence. The title can also go to more than one person, which was the case last year with President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris. In 2019, climate activist Greta Thunberg was person of the year. More than twenty years ago, the magazine was still talking about man or woman of the year.
Bullied as a boy
Elon Musk was born in South Africa, was bullied at school as a boy and then developed from small entrepreneur to CEO of several companies with a science fiction-like allure. He manages to draw all the media attention time and again, with the dividing line between genius and madness sometimes being razor thin. Most of what the eccentric entrepreneur does appeals to the imagination, but critics also question his ability to turn his dreams into successful profitable applications. His entrepreneurship has done him no harm. Musk is the first person in the world to have a net worth of more than $300 billion.
